Spätestens mit der legendären Man-Recordings-Bühne auf dem Melt ist der neben Dubstep zu DER musikalischen Errungenschaft des vergangenen Jahres zählende Baile Funk endgültig in Deutschland angekommen.
Kurz vor seinem Nürnberger Gastspiel unterhielten wir uns darüber mit Sujinho, der einen Hälfte des NossaTag DJ Team.
Dass Acts wie Bonde do Rolê, Diplo, DJ Beware oder hierzulande vor allem Daniel Haaksman und der „Stuttgarter Brasilianer“ MC Gringo mit dem Sound aus den Brasilianischen Favelas weltweit rocken, kommt nicht von ungefähr. Bereits in den mittleren 80s entstand in Referenz zu „Planet Rock“ von Afrika Bambaataa eine Mischung aus 808er Beats, südamerikanischen Percussionelementen und Gangsta-Rap ähnlichen Textansätzen. In den Vororten von Rio wurden schon bald ganze Fußballplätze für die (nicht immer stressfreien) Partys angemietet. Zur Jahrtausendwende schwappte der Hype dann Stück für Stück auf den Rest der Welt über und wurde auch von nicht aus Brasilien stammenden Künstlern adaptiert und geremixt.
Dank eines Remix von Fatboy Slim und der Verwendung des Tracks in einem Auto-Werbespot brachte es „Quem Que Caguetou“ (Follow Me Follow Me) von Black Alien & Speed 2004 zu beachtlichem Erfolg. In der Folgezeit etablierte sich Baile Funk - auch als Mixtur mit afrikanischen Rhythmus-Einflüssen wie Kuduro und Kwaito - immer mehr in den Clubs und zog damit aus den Favelas raus und hinein in die Szenemetropolen der Welt. Mitten im Geschehen: der wechselweise in New York und Barcelona sesshafte Künstler Sujinho. Ob zusammen mit seinem Partner Cassiano, mit dem er als Nossa Tag DJ Team auftritt und das Modelabel „Nossadesigns“ betreibt (hier kommt z.B. das berühmte „we love baile funk“ - Shirt von M.I.A. her), als Remixer für Genrekollegen oder solo, der Mann ist gefragt. Anlässlich seines ersten Deutschlandbesuches im Januar, in dessen Rahmen er auch bei der Reihe Funkeiro im Stereo zu Gast ist (10. Januar), hat er sich kurz vor Silvester Zeit für eine Runde Skype für uns genommen. Interview 4.0 nennt man das dann wohl. Geht (fast) immer, auf der ganzen Welt und inklusive Kippenpause oder falls nötig, Onlinelexikon nebenan...
[15:01:08] Curt: Hey.
[15:02:11] Sujinho: How are you today man?
[15:03:16] Curt: Fine, thank you. It will become a really cold turn of the year up to here… but the drinks are nice… and there will be some great parties…
[15:04:28] Curt: In January you will play your first time in Germany. What did you hear so far about the scene here?
[15:06:02] Sujinho: Well, mostly I hear that I'm going to have a great time and that the crowds know and love my kind of music.
[15:06:41] Sujinho: It seems you are a little ahead of things.
[15:06:55] Sujinho: But I like to see for myself,
[15:06:57] Sujinho: u know…
[15:07:05] Curt: Hope so... tell us some things about where you are from and your roots (?)
[15:08:33] Sujinho : I was born in Connecticut, my father met my mom there while he was on tour with his band.
[15:08:47] Sujinho : A westindian kinda calypso band,
[15:09:16] Sujinho: was tourchered in a catholic school,
[15:09:28] Sujinho : where kids should only be heard singing,
[15:09:40] Sujinho : took Some acid,
[15:09:45] Sujinho : moved to NY.
[15:10:08] Curt: Besides the catholic choir, what kind of music did influence you in your early years?
[15:13:20] Sujinho: Old black people shit, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, Quincy Jones, then Rappers Delight (My first vinyl!), HipHop and Dancehall form the 80s. Then Guns´n´Roses (I was the singer in a cover band), Killing Time, Suicidal Tendencies, Red Hot Chilly Peppers, Ice Cube, Old NY Club Music...and Rave shit.....that brings us up to like ´92…
[15:13:47] Curt: How did you discover Baile Funk?
[15:14:32] Sujinho: Cassiano and I have been friends since I was like 11.
[15:15:06] Sujinho : I came from Catholic school and he from Brazil so we were outcasts and been hangin´ ever since.
[15:16:00] Sujinho : We used to live in Brooklyn together with his brother Fernando. He came home from Brazil with some Baile Funk Mix tapes…
[15:16:31] Curt: And it influenced you…
[15:16:48] Sujinho: I think “Um Tapinha” was the first song I heard.
[15:17:35] Sujinho: Cassiano and I were producing commercial HipHop for a while…
[15:17:44] Sujinho: …and also making rock…
[15:18:05] Sujinho: …and DJing.
[15:18:25] Sujinho: I guess I’m always looking for a new sound…
[15:18:30] Sujinho: …well new to me…
[15:18:32] Sujinho: …anyway…
[15:18:48] Curt: So you digged yourself into a lot of sound…
[15:19:50] Sujinho: Funks gave me a way to simply play and produce dope music.
[15:20:09] Sujinho: People at first didn’t know what they were listening to.
[15:20:16] Sujinho: So they can’t hate,
[15:20:27] Sujinho: say it’s not real,
[15:20:38] Sujinho: they can just enjoy,
[15:21:02] Sujinho: I got to bang,
[15:21:11] Sujinho: big fat 808's in the club,
[15:21:20] Sujinho: which I always love
[15:21:37] Curt: Have you ever thought that Baile Funk will grow from a favela-thing to a worldwide movement?
[15:24:03] Sujinho: When we released the first CD, I remember we were sitting in our china town studio in front of a pile of CDs... the question came up....what if nobody like this shit? The answer was just that we loved it... in terms of the movement... I feel that this summer will be one of the biggest for Funks on the international stage.
[15:24:30] Curt: Together with Kuduro and Kwaito, Baile Funk became part of global artist performance.
[15:24:52] Curt: What do you think of that mix together of styles from different continents?
[15:27:16] Sujinho: I see them more as dialects of a language becoming more similar via the speed of information.... way back in the day the slave ships spread the rhythms around...they are just coming back together.
[15:27:48] Sujinho: similar instruments, computer, sampler,
[15:27:56] Sujinho: similar sounds,
[15:28:04] Sujinho: kicking snares…
[15:29:20] Sujinho: even the dances...have you seen the kids in harlem getting lite? (Anmerkung der Red.: getting lite = durchdrehen, verrückt werden). Its dope how the search for…
[15:29:16] Curt: The lyrics of Baile Funk are mainly in Portuguese. How is the perception in non-Portuguese speaking countries?
[15:32:14] Sujinho: the language.... Cassiano's track "Gosta" reached a lot of people.
[15:33:01] Sujinho: I have been to parties where every one is singing along but its totally some crazy gibberish.
[15:34:02] Sujinho: It is hard to produce Funks in English just like it’s hard to make a HipHop record in London.
[15:34:40] Sujinho: When you sing or perform... every song you've ever heard is part of the end result.
[15:36:00] Sujinho: I don’t see them getting big until they are some good English tracks…
[15:37:06] Curt: What is the difference between gigs in the US, Europe or Brazil?
[15:40:10] Sujinho: Cassiano is in Brazil, he could answer that better…EU and US… Dance music is way more part of the party culture. Also I feel that people cut loose more in EU... if I can say people in NY go out to get down people here go out to get up.
[15:40:25] Sujinho: Make sense?
[15:43:07] Sujinho: You are more likely to see 5 dudes with no rhythm that can´t dance at all jumping around having the time of their lives.
[15:43:13] Sujinho: I feel like the dance music experience is more medicine at home, more favourite candy here.
[15:43:26] Sujinho: Both good.
[15:43:49] Curt: Together with Cassioano you are running “Nossadesigs”. What is it all about?
[15:43:55] Sujinho : Same result different motivation
[15:43:59] Sujinho : NOSSAAAAAA!!!!
[15:45:38] Sujinho : NOSSA is a Lifestyle brand in the most literal scene on the word... we make shit that we like, throw parties we want to go to.
[15:45:04] Curt: What else do we have to expect in 2009 from your (or nossa)?
[15:47:04] Sujinho: Well I’ve relocated to Barcelona and Cassiano has set up shop in Brazil. We intend to have a huge impact on international dance floors this summer.
[15:47:29] Curt: alright.
[15:47:56] Sujinho: I'm here in Barcelona to put the hype machine aside from a while and make a truckload of tunes.
[15:48:30] Sujinho: I hope the funk lover’s aren’t disappointed in the new music´s.
[15:48:40] Sujinho: its still us.

[15:49:09] Curt: Why should the people come to your gig at club stereo?
[15:55:09] Sujinho: Because I intend to get in that booth with a truckload of energy, drink a bottle of tequila and get the police from two towns away to tell us to keep it down. One thing I do for sure is create a frenzy, we WILL have mad fun, we won’t want the night to end!

in brasilien gibt es wohl immerwieder was neues,
es iegt wohl am wetter und an diesem immensen bedarf an (tanz) mucke..
vor vielen jahren habe ich auf ner combilation Chico Science endeckt sein stil wurde "Mangue Beats" genannt. es ist ne art vorläufer von Baile Funk sozusagen die Band-fassung davon, hat mir persöhnlich ein stück besser gefallen, hatte zwar nicht diesen rRRRumms war aber kreativer weil nicht von (den üblichen) samples abhängig..:) Chico Science ist leider bei nem autocrash tot, es lebe der funk!! |

Immerhin an Quem Que Dingsbums (auf Mr.Bongo hat ichs glaub ich) kann ich mich noch erinnern, da haben zumindest auf Thekenschlampen dann die Leute dazu gefeiert.
Für uns Europäer ist der klassische Baile Funk Sound musikalisch aber auch zu ähnlich, weswegen ein reiner Abend nur mit diesen Sounds nicht funktioniert und die Texte versteht nunmal kein Mensch bei uns. Früher wurde es halt in Breaks-Sets reingemixt, jetzt läuft es zusammen mit Fidget House und Co. bzw. die Baile Funk Artists kooperieren ja teilweise schon mit Leuten wie Crookers, Hervé usw. um ein weiteres Publikum zu erreichen. |
