curt: Your latest studio album is called „Dead Ahead“ and you also released a Dead Moon „Best of“-album called „Echoes of Past“. That kind of sounds like that you already knew that Dead Moon will split.
Fred: That was the idea of our label Subpop. Maybe they knew someting wie didn’t ... No, by the time we finished the documentary „Unknown Passage" and all that stuff , we were all getting tired of doing the same thing for 20 years. It felt to be the right time to make a clean split.
curt: How come you started Pierced Arrows right afterwards?
Fred: We started our new band 6 months after the split and that is quite a long time. We got bored just sitting around and said, hey, let’s go and do this!
Toody: Well, Fred doesn’t waste much time. He is a very impatient man (laughing).
curt: You also began a monster tour right away with lots of gigs. Isn’t that too stressful?
Fred: Man, I am really tired right now, it is the end of the tour and I am fucking ready for home.
curt: What did your kids say about your new project and all the touring?
Toody: Oh, they know that it will never be over for us, we will probably keep doing this until we are in the grave. That’s the stuff we do, no problem.
curt: Are you going to play Dead Moon songs when touring with Pierced Arrows?
Fred: Yeah. We are gonna play a few of them tonite. But of course we will basically play brand new Pierced Arrows stuff. During a regular set we play one pretty old Dead Moon song which we hardly ever played live before called „Over the Edge“ and then the at the end „It’s ok“, 54/40 or fight“ and sometimes „Dead Moon Night“.
curt: How did you meet your new drummer?
Kely: It kind of goes back a long time since my father was in the band Albatros with Fred.
Fred: Yeah. Maybe his dad will show up tonite and play some keyboards ... Before we played about three practices with Kelly and once we played live, we were pretty sure he is the right guy for Pierced Arrows. But you never know. It is like meeting a girl and you think you are in love until you put it onstage ... You can’t tell during a practice but once your up onstage you feel right away if the chemistry is right or not.
Kely: And we had only 6 practices before our first live show but that gig was amazing... In most of my other bands I used to play base and guitar, for example for Murder Disco X in the area around Stuttgart. I was never really serious about drumming until this band. I definitely will be going home sore ...
Fred: Sort of, he is still a virgin ...
curt: How do the fans react to Kelly as the new drummer? At Dead Moon shows former drummer Andrew had these certain cermonies with the candle in the Whiskey bottle and pouring beer on the drums, etc.
Kely: No, these are all Andrews tricks.
Fred: We have ring power ... When we went to New Zealand, Toody gave us all these rings on Kellys birthday, so we are all bonded in a certain way. Lords of the Rings, the trilogy.
Kely: Sometimes there are people looking at me, probably thinking: „Who ist this guy who is not Andrew?“ but we are a different band, we are not Dead Moon and everyone has been really cool to me so far.
Toody: Everbody who was talking to me had nothing but compliments to give to Kelly and they love the new energy that he is putting into it. It is cool for the continuity and the support from the fans is great. People love to see what we are up to, pretty much overall, we are really happy about what we are doing right now.
Fred: Dead Moon is a very fun memory, something I will always remember. I will always thank God that I was involved in Dead Moon ...
Toody: ... but Pierced Arrows gives us a new excitement.
curt: What will you do when you come home?
Toody: We have a summer full of shows, an Amercian tour coming up in October. We got three new songs that nobody has heard and that haven’t been recorded yet, so there’s stuff to do ...
curt: Was Pierced Arrows accepted in your home town Portland right away?
Toody: We thought that we will probably are going to be just another support band for a year or so and that we had to basically start all over. But it lasted about two shows and people were coming up to us and said „No, you are the
headliner!“. People at home have been very supportive.
